Step 1: Get Ready
Download and print out our handy Butterfly Chart to help you identify and record the butterflies you spot.

Step 2: Join in
Choose a place and spot butterflies and moths for 15 minutes. Good places include your garden, a park, or in a wood. Use our ID chart to make a note of which species you see. Click to watch a video of Sir David Attenborough introduce the big butterfly count.

Step 3: Submit sightings
This year's big butterfly count will run from Saturday 14th July - Sunday 5th August 2012. You can see all the 2011 results or view the results map below to see what people spotted across the UK.
